12th Annual Bicycle Collection for Bikes For The World
DATE and TIME: Saturday, April 22, 2017, 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM (two volunteer shifts: 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Volunteers can opt to serve BOTH shifts.)
LOCATION: Triangle Motors, 1790 North Market Street, Frederick, Maryland (just off Route 26)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Rotary Club of Carroll Creek organizes a bicycle collection for Bikes For The World. Bikes For The World is an Arlington, Virginia-based charitable organization, which ships the bicycles to Africa, Latin America and other developing regions, where partner charities train and hire local people to recondition the bikes - generating bicycle sales and service jobs. The bikes are distributed to individuals in need of affordable transport to work, school, medical services, et cetera.
VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS: Bicycle reception, Donor receipting, Bicycle prepping for shipment (remove pedals and re-orient handlebars for shipment), Loading bikes in trans-shipment container.
VOLUNTEER PEOPLE-POWER SOUGHT: 16 volunteers total (8 in each of two three-hour shifts); volunteers can opt to serve the full six-hours. Click on this Youtube link to learn the tasks volunteers will engage in - http://youtu.be/zbvrFKybOUM
TOOLS and EQUIPMENT: Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, adjustable wrenches, pedal wrenches and screwdrivers for removing pedals, lowering seats, re-orienting handlebars and prepping bikes for shipment; Bikes For The World will supply a basic set of tools and nylon ties for securing pedals to the frames.
