Summertime and the living is easy! Crabs, beer, BBQ and Fellowship was an awesome event attended by 190 Rotarians and guests-75 from Carroll Creek. The idea for this gathering started about 5 months ago when our then 4 Frederick President- Elects – Betsy Pakenas, Deborah Morrone, Rich Glover and I as well as Dave Lerer, Howard County President- Elect, decided that we should have a party together.  We wanted to have a kickoff event for the Rotary year that would include Anne Matthews, RI director, as our speaker.

And all fell beautifully into place! From Karen and Wayne Sixx hosting at their beautiful home outside Libertytown, to a sunny warm day, to our very own Bryan Mack securing tables, chairs at no cost and music by Nick Karras, to Amber Nagle of our club and Jane Bongard of the noon club (btw, these ladies rock at party planning!!) coordinating the party logistics, to Anne sharing her thoughts on the Rotary Foundation. As Rotarians, Anne encouraged us to support the Foundation so as to help End Polio Plus, poverty and illiteracy and provide clean water throughout our world.  Yes it was a  wonderful afternoon and thank you to our Service Above Self Rotarians, Bryan and Amber and all who attended and enjoyed the good food, atmosphere and learning from a classy Rotary lady.

If you missed last week’s meeting, Shawn Wolf, Kim Chaney and Andy Baum were our presenters. Shawn shared how we are progressing on our Strategic Plan which is on our website under documents. Kim let us know that our organization is fiscally healthy and that we have over a quarter of a million dollars in our accounts. We also were given a history of how each President over the last 10 years has ended their year with Past President Dave as the biggest winner having an excess of $67,000 of income over expenses at the end of his year. Last but not least, Andy gave an overview of our Leadership Succession Plan so that there are no more drive- bys by Past President Olivia to select future club leaders! And thanks to all of you who have responded to Andy’s survey.

Tomorrow our guest speaker is Francois Grobbelaar, CEO & Founder of FASfacts in South Africa. FASfacts is a partner with our Hope in South Africa project. I had the pleasure of meeting Francois this weekend and he is a very kind gentleman who has passion for his country and the health of mothers and their babies.  We will also be collecting underwear for this project. SO PLEASE bring in undergarments for babies, children and Moms that Jonathan Warner can take over on his trip next week.

I hope to see you in the morning!

PS On Sunday I read there are 100 days to our presidential election which reminded me to check- 67 days to Oktoberfest-just ask Tom “Bo Derek” Meachum!
