Frederick's Oktoberfest

logo-int@2x.png

When it is: September 29–October 1, 2017

What it is: Frederick's Oktoberfest is the largest event in the area that celebrates German heritage by attempting to replicate the traditional Volksfest (folk festival) held in Germany each year. The festivities include authentic German cuisine and music, as well as souvenirs. We depend on the local community to bring the fun and revelry.

How we got involved: Community Living, a local not-for-profit agency, operated Frederick’s Oktoberfest for the first several years. They did a wonderful job of growing the festival year over year, to the point where they could no longer manage it alone. In 2008, Community Living approached RCCC with the proposal to take over the organization and operation of the event. As it turned out, RCCC was also looking to establish a signature fundraising event for the club. Therefore, in collaboration with Community Living and with the additional resources of the other Frederick Rotary clubs, RCCC took over the management of Frederick's Oktoberfest.

What it means to RCCC: This longstanding two-day event is RCCC’s largest fundraiser. The entire profit of this event goes to support Rotary’s efforts in our community and throughout the world.

Tour De Frederick

When it is: August 11–12, 2017

What it is: Tour de Frederick is a three-day cycling event with various routes ranging from 8 to 100 miles for all abilities. Events include the 10-mile Frederick History Ride, the 102-mile Century Ride, and the Clustered Spires High Wheel Race, to name a few. Funds raised through the event are divided between the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County and RCCC.

How we got involved: This weekend-long event was originally run entirely by the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County. Their organization did such a good job organizing and promoting the event that it eventually became too much for them to handle. With many bike enthusiasts in our club, RCCC was recruited to help organize and promote Tour de Frederick. We even have a team of Rotarians who ride in the event each year.

What it means to RCCC: Tour de Frederick quickly became our club’s second largest fundraising event. Not only is Tour de Frederick a great way for our club to raise money to support our work within our community and throughout the world, it’s also an exciting event for all ages!
