A Facelift for Baker Park’s Band shell

More than two years ago the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek (RCCC) asked the Friends of Baker Park for ideas for possible projects centered in the park. One suggestion was the renovation of the Bandshell. It had been badly abused over time and was clearly in need of some civic help. Also, the original plan for the facility was never fully implemented due to City budget restrictions (1990).

The RCCC recently completed a major community service project (the addition of a new building for the Police Athletic League in the Sagner neighborhood) and were searching for their Next Big Project. After considering many possible projects against their criteria [Is it achievable? Is it sustainable? Is it visible? Is it necessary?], the RCCC selected the Band Shell.

In addition to fundamental repairs of damage from vandalism and wear & tear, the original design for the Band Shell will be executed providing a more functional facility for performances. New wings will be created to provide performers with direct access to changing rooms and toilet facilities. The stage will be enlarged and the lighting improved. A sound & lighting control platform will be built behind the seating area to accommodate the control equipment used by performing groups. These and many more improvements in the infrastructure of the Band Shell will attract quality performance groups to Frederick and enhance the enjoyment of Baker Park by all of its friends.

The RCCC engaged the original architect of the Band Shell, Gary Baker, to update his original concept for this project. His participation in this project has assisted Rotary in understanding the scope of the original design and the planning necessary for its fulfillment.

The City of Frederick has been totally supportive of this project: Department of Public Works has been instrumental in assisting RCCC to get the Band Shell physical work up and running. The City’s supervisors have shown a commitment above and beyond.

Many of the features of the recreated Band Shell will not be observable to the public, but the new wings will be a standout. Especially because they will be faced with the same stone as that used for the Carillon and the Carroll Creek structures. Aesthetic continuity in the Park is a good thing.

The construction work began in March 2008. Come out and see the progress!  The public will be able to appreciate the intended changes during the Summer Concert Series and hopefully be moved to contribute to its completion.  The project will be completed in the Spring of 2009, in time for the Event Season.
